Master of Chaplaincy Program by Rev. Bowers

Chaplaincy Program Essay:
A Journey
A Mission
A sacred Covenant
Submitted by Rev. Tommy Bowers

Throughout our lives, most of us are nurtured in countless ways. Physically, we care for ourselves through nutrition and exercise. Mentally, we have psychiatrists who prescribe medications for various mental illnesses. However, the spiritual nature of mankind is tragically neglected by most institutions. It is a subject that has become so convoluted and intertwined with the negativity of religion that people dare not touch it.

I have learned in the course, however, that true spirituality does not necessarily require a specific belief system. Expressing spirituality can range from holding an elderly person’s hand in death, reassuring a child that all will be well just before a surgery, or being the bearer of the sad news to the family of a suddenly deceased loved one. Thus, I have discovered my countless, God-given gifts that could be cultivated and used productively as a chaplain.

The course has taught me the vast nature of opportunities for a chaplain. I always thought that chaplains were found in churches and that their jobs were limited to hospitals and funeral homes. I have unveiled a new level of knowledge through this course. A chaplaincy can be a paying job, can involve organizations and institutions ranging from counseling, if qualified, to working for a police force. Also, a chaplain can bring comfort through their sincerity and silence while in the presence of grieving individuals and families. Furthermore, I have discovered that a chaplain can bring their credentials to the table when pursuing other occupations such as marriage counseling. The possibilities are endless.

One of my greatest God-given assets that will serve my duties of chaplaincy well is my strong sensitivity to others. I can often be around a person and sense that they are struggling. Also, numerous friends and colleagues frequent me for comfort and reassurance during a personal crisis. Often, such needs are met by my being a good listener, which I’ve learned from this course is a valuable asset in itself. To pick up on other’s sensitivities avails me the opportunity for personal reflection and a greater understanding of myself which, in turn, gives me resources to offer another person. To look people directly in the eyes and hear their pain is a trait in which the chaplain need say nothing at times, as people are able to sense when they are being heard and cared about.

Furthermore, attaining my chaplaincy gives meaning to my ordination. Without a spiritual commitment, I believe that a title is simply just that. I’ve often wondered which comes first, the spirituality or the commitment to spirituality. When I became ordained, I felt blessed but confused. I wasn’t aware of what it meant to have such a spiritual title. I skimmed through the pages of the university, trying to find my way. When I found the section on chaplaincy, I sensed that I had come home.

Deciding to take this journey into chaplaincy filled me with a sense of spiritual commitment, safety, and joy. At that point, my ordination at last had heartfelt meaning to me. At long last, I found a path leading me to a place where I could help others through God’s gift of compassion offered through me. In doing so, I have learned from this course the importance in one’s continuity of spiritual practice and growth. Although a chaplaincy does not have to be based on a particular religion, spirituality is the driving force and must be nurtured.

In other cases, religion is an important factor, such as working with a church. On a personal note, I want my chaplaincy to be an all-encompassing, loving spiritual quest in which all things good are honored and respected: One’s beliefs, or lack of, do not minimize their value and thus, all people are entitled to the same love and care given by a chaplain.

On the other hand, the job of a chaplain is not necessarily one of greeting and hugs from the people in need. It is likely not uncommon for the chaplain to take the brunt of an emotional situation, such as a violent death, through the words of the grieving. That is, the chaplain may be in a position to be the receiver of harsh expressions of grief, and must be able to handle such. Although no one has to tolerate verbal abuse, I believe that a chaplain should renounce the situation, perhaps by using the prayer of St. Francis in setting self aside, bringing understanding, light, and stillness.

In such cases, I have learned that a chaplain is better off saying nothing than saying too much. Some situations arise in which no words can bring console. Thus, the chaplain must know that sometimes fewer words are better. Perhaps a brief, general but sincere sentiment such as “I will pray for you,” or “I am sorry about your loss. Please call me anytime, day or night, if I can help you in any way. Perhaps give them a business card and offer to pray with them.

If a chaplain is hired to fulfill a duty within public service, such as the police force, much prudence should be used, as their presence is to help in extenuating circumstances, ranging from crime scenes, accident scenes, and working with police officers in dealing with some of the harsh emotions that are affiliated with their jobs. As this course teaches, police officers are a tight-nit group indeed. It is difficult to break the circular bond that exists among them. The chaplain should respect the parameters but should reassure each officer, collectively or individually, that he or she is available to all officers to assist them in any way possible.

At last, my duty as a chaplain will be in a potential (not frequently) controversial area: That is the niche of paranormal investigations. Having been a member of such an organization for over a year, I have seen a great need arise among investigators. Spiritual advisors and prayers for safety and protection are all too often thrown aside, simply because the availability of such a person is nebulous. Also, many homes need blessing and deliverance prayers with a possible clergyman, or through the guidance of such.

Depending upon the type of case, the [http://ping.fm/A9IWa chaplain] is likely to have the authority to perform the house blessing and prayer without another clergy member present. Such a case would be a cleansing ritual to reinforce the purity of the home. The course has emphasized. However, a few paranormal cases would need the absolute assistant of a more experienced clergy person (in the case of demonic hauntings, assuming that such is within the chaplain’s belief system). This decision is usually made by the team leader of such groups. The best and safest rule is that the chaplain consult a higher clergyman before conducting any rituals whatsoever. The main duty of the chaplain is to oversee the spirituality of the team and to assure their safety.

Most importantly, the families that have been plagued by paranormal happenings have much tumult and chaos among them. The chaplains duty is by far greater after an investigation than during. All too often, investigators make their appearance, collect their data, take photos videos, tell the family of the findings, and leave with no explanation on follow-up or specific instructions on who to call on for spiritual guidance. In such cases, I believe that the chaplain should follow up with the families on a regular basis, offer appropriate spiritual help within the family, such as prayer and counseling (if the chaplain is trained to do so).

Some examples of appropriate actions would be to participate in guiding the family in prayer, inquiring about any further happenings, and immediately contact the group should that be the case. I realize that this area is not emphasized directly in the course, but it is a deprived need that I have noticed and have attempted to remedy with much success. Ephesians contains information about what would be considered paranormal, and could be used as a reference, in some cases, for the family.

Furthermore, spiritual warfare is extremely important and highly underemphasized whenever a team of investigators enter a dwelling. First of all, I believe that I have a spiritual obligation to my team of investigators. Having much training in this area, I emphasize the right and wrongs involved in investigating. As a chaplain, I must drive home the fact that we are not attempting to play with, challenge, or replace our faith through the paranormal. Biblically, these presences are validated, but one must also be very cautious in how far they stretch these endorsements. Also, as a ministry, I could assist my group in techniques that I am already familiar with such as various methods of meditation and pointers for prayer.

A fine line exists in which a vulnerable person could become overly obsessed, too weak from illness or mental problems to participate. I have learned the importance of the duty of having a discerning eye and a protective heart over my team. Also, the crucial nature of “armoring up” spiritually can be taught to help my members in their safety. As the ULC course emphasizes, my spirituality as a chaplain is of utmost importance as I must have it in order to give it. Also, the importance of developing a sacred place for spiritual growth, although I will not necessarily have a ministry, is vital for my team and anyone who else who wants to participate for the aforementioned reasons.

My wishes are to assist my team members, as well as any others who express a need, to discover their relationship with God. I’ve discovered through the teachings of this course that my understanding of God is vast (not narrow and exclusive) and that He is available to all of us in a way that we can understand. I’ve found this through reading the various scenarios presented in the midst of the lessons and asked myself in each case, “What, exactly, am I referring these people to when I give them the needed reassurance? Who am I referring to when I speak of the Almighty?” It was then that I discovered that my understanding of a loving God stemmed from an essential belief system which allows me to relate to Him.

This course, I believe, is not an ending but a catalyst in a whole new beginning. A title alone is simply that. The course clarifies the vague ideas that many have of a chaplaincy. It can be difficult, complex, demoralizing perhaps, and frustrating. Yet, the Almighty has called on a measure of his children to take on the humble duty of serving others in this special way where words, or lack of, may count in tough situations. The course has deemed itself beyond invaluable in explaining detailed scenarios that a chaplain might be faced with. Although I admit, I slacked on a few of the lessons, I’ve learned that we are here to commence, not to be perfect.

My beliefs are strongly centered around the idea that only two forces are at play in our consciousness, and every thought, action, idea or attitude is based on one of these traits: That is love and fear. Being on a loving path, I view the course as a stepping stone to a higher level of love and service. I would recommend that anyone who is truly dedicated to loving thoughts, actions, beliefs, and thanksgiving pursue this course as a means of learning the specifics and logistics of a chaplaincy. In fact, I am going to strongly recommend that two of my valuable team members pursue this course for their own growth and gift-giving abilities.

Universal Life Church - A Marine

God's Busy

0AIf you don't know GOD, don't make stupid remarks!!!!!!!

A United States Marine was attending some college courses between assignments..
He had completed missions in Iraq and
Afghanistan . One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist and
a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in he looked to the
ceiling and flatly stated, 'God, if you are
real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15
minutes.'  The lecture room fell silent.
You could hear a pin drop.

Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, 'Here I am God. I'm still
waiting.' It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and  cold-cocked him, knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold.

The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked, stunned, and sat there  looking on in silence.  The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken,  looked at the Marine and asked, 'What the heck is the matter with you? Why did you do that?'

The Marine calmly replied, 'God was too busy today protecting American soldiers
who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like an idiot. So, He sent me.'

The Farmer's Donkey....

One day a farmer's donkey fell into an abandoned well.  The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was too old and the well needed to be covered up anyway; so it just wasn't worth it to him to try to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him.  They each grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. Realizing what was happening, the donkey at first cried and wailed horribly.

Then, a few shovel-fulls later, he quieted down completely.  The farmer peered down into the well, and was astounded by what he saw. With every shovel-full of dirt that hit his back, the donkey would shake it off and take a step up on the new layer of dirt.

As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up.  Pretty soon, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off, to the shock and astonishment of everyone.

The Moral: Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to stop wailing, and not let the dirt bury you, but to shake it off and take a step up.  Each one of our troubles is a stepping-stone.  We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
Free your heart from hatred. Free your mind from worries. Live simply. Give more. Expect less.

By the way, after he calmed down, the donkey kicked the crap out of the farmer who tried to bury him, which brings us to the second moral of this story:
When you try to cover your ass, you will always get your ass kicked.

Universal Life Church

There once was a little girl who had a bad temper.  Her mother gave her a bag of nails and told her that every time she lost her temper, she must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the girl had driven 37 nails into the fence.  Over the next few weeks, as she learned to control her anger, the
number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. She discovered it was easier to hold her temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the girl didn't lose her temper at all.  She told her mother about it and the mother suggested that
the girl now pull out one nail for each day that she was able to hold her temper.  The day passed and the young girl was finally able to tell her mother that all the nails were gone.

The mother took her daughter by the hand and led her to the fence.  She said, "You have done well, my daughter, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one." You can put a knife in a person and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one.

All About Being A Chaplain

This article discusses the current trends in the realm of chaplaincy. It discusses what chaplains do, the reasons they do what they do, and the great need in our communities for this one-of-a-kind type of clergy. The article further talks about the changes in our communities and the way that alters the spiritual requirements of the various religious and spiritual groups in our midst.

I once accepted a new job, located in a distant town. My wife had to remain behind to get our home ready for sale, while I forged on to find a rental in the new town, 120 miles away. I was given the name of a landlord to speak with. As soon as I met with the landlord, I noticed something unusual about her. I just had to ask, “Are you involved with a ministry?” As it happened, she was an ordained minister who held services every Sunday for those campers who frequented the campground she owned. She became my first exposure to what a chaplain was.

Perhaps you have experienced something like that yourself. Some people stand out to you as different. Hard to pin point exactly what the difference is. Something inside of you, your spirit, already knew the answer. You likely felt the Divine Mark upon that person.

Chaplaincy is always evolving. It has always been a creative response to ever-changing conditions. As people change, so does the work of the chaplaincy. Individuals continue on in their lives doing what they need to get by. Folks will experience times in their lives when they leave home, go traveling, finish their education, settle down for a period of time, perhaps endure an extended illness. A career choice might limit a person’s ability to worship with a community on a consistent basis. This is a place that chaplains are able to fill a void. A few types of places in which chaplains may likely be found:

Ski and holiday resorts.

Emergency response teams.

Apartment complexes.

Airports.

Cruise ships.

Hospice centers.

In the United States, the majority of chaplains come from the Christian faith groups. During the 1st part of the 20th century, the military only recognized 3 religious groups as chaplains: Catholic, Protestant and Jew. Unitarian chaplains slipped through under the Protestant label. The military has since widened their standards to include Wiccans or Muslims as well. Hospitals and hospice centers have also followed suit.

Having pastors, serving as chaplains, making themselves available to businesses and/or schools is another increasing trend. School shootings as well as other problems have opened up these opportunities. To learn about how to start a new church, I once went with a mission team to Baltimore, MD. As part of the program, we had been given a bus tour of Baltimore by the Baltimore Police dept.. Driving by the school, we had been told the Baltimore school district was requesting help from ministers and clergy to assist on the campuses, working as chaplains. They had determined that the presence and counsel of chaplains dramatically reduced school violence.

Change continues to be an inevitable part of life. Modernism has been replaced by a group termed “post-modernism.” More and more communities are becoming a mixing bowl of cultures and religions. Throughout my childhood, I noticed that individuals tended to gather in communities based upon common income, culture, and background. There was generally 1 dominant religion. Within the community I now live in, 50 years ago that county was 80 percent Roman Catholic, 10 percent Episcopalian, with the remainder consisting of Protestant, Jewish, or no religion. In last check, the area is about half Catholic, with the rest consisting of Protestant, Jewish, Unitarian, Christian Science, Mormon, Jehovah’s Witness and a host of New Age groups.

As you will be able to see, chaplains today become faced with many more belief systems to deal with. Today’s chaplain must possess a lot of religious or spiritual tolerance. Or the chaplain has to be far more knowledgeable of other religions as well. The ULC Seminary offers an excellent class on Comparative Religion, which will help you be ready. Knowing where other people are coming from has been essential if you ever wish to converse intelligently with them or minister to them. Authors Naomi Paget and Janet McCormack have this to say about it:

The need is great.

There are hurting people everywhere. Belonging to any hospital, there are lonely individuals, sick or dying, who need to be comforted. There are individuals, living in communities, who work non-standard shifts or miss sharing fellowship with others from the same faith. Professionals like police or firefighters need someone occasionally, to pray with and to seek help in understanding whenever evil raises its ugly head.

Chaplains may be there for just such folks. This unique clergy is still viewed as the “keeper of the sacred” for those who're unconnected to a religious congregation. A prayer, a few words of advice, a simple ritual, or the touch of a caring hand does much for people who are alone, without friends, or afraid.

A chaplain keeps the sacred by ministering to other people. As the universal consciousness has given existence, we go and care for that existence. The Supreme Being – The Universe – All that is Divine, honors and accepts a ministry from the heart. It truly is ‘Divine Glory’ defined. For more information about becoming a chaplain, visit the ULC Seminary’s Chaplaincy Program.

This is an excerpt from the Universal Life Church Seminary’s Chaplaincy Studies program, authored by Rev. Daniel Moore.

If you desire to learn about how to become a chaplain, this is a phenomenal course, showing you the things that are expected of you as a chaplain and how best to give counsel to those of different backgrounds.

Universal Life Church

In March of 1976, I became ordained through the Church of Gospel Ministry Inc., Chula Vista CA.,  In October of 1979, I left Maine for parts unknown.  In my travels I finally decided to go to the Main Church Headquarters in Chula Vista.  Fully knowing I didn't have enough money to get far, but I had faith that the Lord would take care of me.  I left Maine with $50.00 in my pocket.  Needless to say $50.00 didn't get me too far.  I got as far as Youngstown Ohio on my $50.00.  I had a good local minister who told me if I needed money to call him collect he'd wire me money.  He wired me money but he told me I had to come home with the money.  Needless to say, I agreed, but reluctantly had other plans.  Upon arrival in Youngstown I was completely out of money, and was scared to death not knowing what I was going to do.  I went to the local Salvation Army in Youngstown, they offered me food to eat but that wasn't gonna help me.  I needed monetary help not food.  I was scared and I prayed alot and cried alot too.  Finally I looked in the local telephone directory and came across a ministers name that I had no Idea whatsoever that he'd help but he did.  He came to the place where I was and met me.  First off he proceeded to take me to the local gas station and fill my car with gas and oil.  He then had me proceed to follow him across town, he said the church has an account across town, follow me there.  I followed him, we pulled into a Best Western Motel, he said wait here, he then came out and passed me the daily paper.  He asked me "are you hungry"?  I did not know him and he did not know me either, across the motel parking lot there was a resturant he took me there and ordered me dinner.  When I was about 1/2 way done my dinner, he said I have to go, my first thought was oh no am I going to jail?  I asked him who was going to pay my bill?  He said your bill is taken care of as is your room at the motel too and you will stay here as our guest untill Monday.  On Sunday morning I proceeded to go to his Church Service.  His congregation was so large they had to have Church in a local auditorium not in a church building.  At that curch service, he explained to the congregation how he helped a young man in need, and put me up at a motel at the churches expence, and explained the reason I was going to California in the first place.  I had faith that the Lord was going to take care of me and he did.  That Faithful Sunday morning, the pastor told the congregation what was happening, people started coming fourth with monetary contributions for me to continue on my journey.  They contributed exactly enough finances to get me to my destination in California.

Saying Grace In A Restaurant
Last week, I took my children to a restaurant.

My six-year-old son asked if he could say grace.

As we bowed our heads he said, "God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and justice for all! Amen!"

Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman
remark, "That's what's wrong with this country. Kids today don't even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!"

Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, "Did I do it wrong? Is
God mad at me?"

As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table.

He winked at my son and said, "I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer."

"Really?" my son asked.

"Cross my heart," the man replied.

Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), "Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes."

Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My son stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life.

He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, "Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good already."

I love this story!
Please keep it moving.
Sometimes, we all need some ice cream.

I hope God sends you some Ice Cream today!

Online Ordination - becoming ordained

People generally become ordained for three reasons:

To perform the legal function of officiating at someone's wedding,
To further their own spiritual or religious goals or,
As a lark.

ULC - Universal Life ChurchOnline OrdinationIt is our hope that you will take your ordination seriously, as it is a serious rite.

There is much talk about the term 'Instant Online Ordination.' Technically, your ordination is not happening online. The internet is merely a conduit for your application for ordination through the Universal Life Church. When you complete this form, your request for ordination is sent to headquarters in Modesto, CA to be processed and recorded by hand. It is at this time that you will officially become a minister. Congratulations and welcome!

• If you ordain someone else, get that person's express permission first.
• Please check for correct spelling and capitalization and that the email address is correct.

Upon becoming a new minister, you will begin to receive our free monthly newsletter, containing useful ministerial information, monthly specials, and a free ceremony sample. You will also be sent special announcements, breaking news about the ULC and much more.

Within 5-10 minutes after your ordination, you will receive an email message. It's usually immediate and it will be the same message that pops up in the window. Please save this email, in the event that your request for ordination through the Universal Life Church is lost in cyberspace. If you order a credential immediately following your ordination, you will need that email and/or the pop-up email, to verify your ordination with headquarters. Since all of the ordinations are recorded by hand, this may take some time.

Your ordination is for life. You are still ordained whether you have moved, married or lost your credential. If any of these are the case, contact amy@ulcseminary.org to update your information and to find out how to get a new credential.

Universal Life Church - Pastor and his wife

I had to share this...

Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason!

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned to their first ministry, to reopen a church in suburban Brooklyn, arrived in early October excited about their opportunities.  When they saw their church, it was very run down and needed much work.  They set a goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas Eve. They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc, and on December 18 were ahead of schedule and just about finished. On December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.  On the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.  His heart sank when he saw that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the  sanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about head high.  The pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor and not knowing what else to do but postpone the Christmas Eve service, headed home.  On the way he noticed that a local business was having a flea market type sale for charity so he stopped in.  One of the items was a beautiful, handmade, ivory colored, crocheted  tablecloth with exquisite work, fine colors and a  Cross embroidered right in the center.  It was just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall.  He bought it and headed back to the church.  By this time it had started to snow.

An older woman running from the opposite direction was trying to catch the bus.  She missed it.  The pastor invited her to wait in the warm church for the next bus 45 minutes later.  She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry.  The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.  Then he noticed the woman walking down the center aisle.  Her face was like a sheet.  "Pastor," she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" The pastor explained.  The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into it there.  They were.  These were the initials of the woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria.  The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor told how he had just gotten the tablecloth.  The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria.  When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.  Her husband was going to follow her the next week. He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her husband or her home again. The pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth, but she made the pastor keep it for the church.  The pastor insisted on driving her home; that was the least he could do.  She lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day for a housecleaning job. What a wonderful service they had on Christmas Eve. The church was almost full.  The music and the spirit were great.  At the end of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many said that they would return.  One older man, whom the pastor recognized from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he wasn't leaving.  The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on the front wall because it was identical to one that his wife had made years ago when they lived in Austria before the war and how could there be two tablecloths so much alike.  He told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and put in a prison.  He never saw his wife or his home again all the 35 years in between.  The pastor asked him if he would allow him to take him for a little ride.  They drove to Staten Island and to the same house where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier.

He helped the man climb the three flights of stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on the door and he saw the greatest Christmas reunion he could ever imagine.  True Story - submitted by Pastor Rob Reid Who says God does not work in mysterious ways.  I asked the Lord to bless you as I prayed for you today, to guide you and protect you as you go along your way.  His love is always with you, His promises are true, and when we give Him all our cares you know He will see us through.  So when the road you're traveling on seems difficult at best. Just remember I'm here praying and God will do the rest.  When there is nothing left but God; that is when you find out that God is all you need.

Kind Words

Thank you for inquiring about my course participation.  I have one pending for several weeks, now.  I sincerely want to complete it soon.  The sample courses and other emails you send are thoroughly enjoyed and educational.  They provide me an avenue of choice for future course selections.  Much appreciated.  My next course would be either a spirituality course or one that teaches about multiple religions.

Currently, I'm exploring a new path of spiritual assistance:  Chaplain of Pets.  This would be ground-breaking in my local area.  My application is being reviewed this week.  Should I start and succeed with providing spiritual services to pets and their owners, I will be happy to send a  picture and quote.  Meanwhile, I have ordained one person, and another one is interested in being ordained through ULC.  There may be a third person, also.  In God's name, I do what is right.

Universal Life Church

Testimony of Rev. Rickey Todd Phillips.
I was a drunk and I could not stop.  I got so bad I would pass out in my chair and wet my paints.  I drank every day.  I tried to stop; I even tried A.A. to no avail.  It was one week until my daughter was born.  I knew I had no where to turn.  Then I went to church. I met a minister named Milt Mitchner, (Assemblies’of God). I looked at him with tears in my eyes and said, “I want what you have and you are going to help me get it.” Well I started church and attended bible studies and then God drew me to the Salvation Army.  I moved up the ranks to Corps Sergeant Major, the highest local office of the non-commissioned officers.  I preached and my wife and I ran the church and food bank while the officers were away.  I also was a guest speaker at another Salvation Army.  My wife’s health was bad so we moved to Boise , Idaho .  They had better health care then they did in Alaska . I was a meat cutter for Albertsons and they did not let me have Sundays off.  Well I was not in the word and went a little haywire.  Then we moved to Reno because my wife’s mother was sick and I still worked for Albertsons as a meat cutter.  Six years later I hold a diploma from The Voice of Prophecy “Discover Bible Course” -- A diploma from The Voice of Prophecy “Focus on  Prophecy Bible Course”—“Pastoral Diploma” from The Cathedral University. I was ordained by the Universal Life Church on Jan. 23, 2007.  And now I was promoted to meat manager.  God is Faithful Amen !!!  Jesus is my belief system.  When the Son sets you free you are free indeed!!!

Amy,
This was sent to me a few days ago.  While I have been going through some spiritual turmoil.  But I have stuck to my own thoughts, I had people telling me that I was wrong, however I knew that I was not.  I trusted what I felt inside.  Today after work, I had a meeting with two of my friends and we hashed everything out.  By trusting in myself and my feelings, things were worked out to the highest good.  I just sat down and read this email.  :o)  Tiny blessings Red rose
Thank you so much!
In love and light

Universal Life Church

Dear Amy,

I wanted to follow-up to my note of the 15th to which I attached the ministry newsletter, The Mid-Atlantic Lighthouse and better introduce myself and my work.

I am a preacher's kid whose father had the wisdom to make me be certain that I was called into the ministry and not just following in his footsteps.  Since 1982, I have pastored in five congregations, been a mission planter, served as a denominational executive and a state guard chaplain, and as a Bible college administrator and professor.  At present, I am in the Civil Service in "tentmaking" mode.  I have been traditionally ordained as well as simply ordained and hold credentials in the Universal Life Church.

I would consider myself a compassionate conservative socially and conservative theologically (but not neanderthal!).  My ministry today includes conducting weddings and funerals for those without a church connection.  I also conduct a ministry of encouragement to other ministers - especially those who are called and elect simple ordination.  I believe that ministry as a profession should be a level playing field.  If your calling is sincere, then it doesn't matter how you got there.

I commend you for the work you are doing at the Seminary.  I'm not sure how I may be of service, but if there is something I could provide that would be useful, then I would be happy to help.

I know the ULC covers the breadth of spirituality and I respect that.  I embrace my spiritual path and do not denegrate others but encourage a mutual understanding and respect.

Please feel free to correspond.

Faithfully yours,
David I. Moshier *

Universal Life Church - Dance with God

Dancing With God

When I meditated on the word Guidance,
I kept seeing
"dance" at the end of the word.

I remember reading that doing God's will is a lot like dancing.
When two people try to lead, nothing feels right.
The movement doesn't flow with the music,
and everything is quite uncomfortable and jerky.
When one person realizes that, and lets the other lead,
both bodies begin to flow with the music.
One gives gentle cues, perhaps with a nudge to the back
or by pressing Lightly in one direction or another.

It's as if two become one body, moving beautifully.
The dance takes surrender, willingness,
and attentiveness from one person
and gentle guidance and skill from the other.
My eyes drew back to the word Guidance
When I saw "G": I thought of God, followed by "u" and "i".
"God, "u" and "i" dance."
God, you, and I dance.
As I lowered my head, I became willing to trust
that I would get guidance about my life.
Once again, I became willing to let God lead.
My prayer for you today is that God's blessings

and mercies are upon you on this day and everyday.
May you abide in God, as God abides in you.

Dance together with God, trusting God to lead
and to guide you through each season of your life.
This prayer is powerful and there is nothing attached
If God has done anything for you in your life,
please share this message with someone else.

There is no cost but a lot of rewards;

so let's continue to pray for one another.
And I Hope You Dance!

Universal Life Church - The Room

THE ROOM
17-year-old Brian Moore had only a short time to write something for a class. The subject was what Heaven was like. "I wowed 'em," he later told his father, Bruce. "It's a killer. It's the bomb. It's the best thing I ever wrote.." It also was the last.

Brian's parents had forgotten about the essay when a cousin found it while cleaning out the teenager's locker at Teary Valley High School . Brian had been dead only hours, but his parents desperately wanted every piece of his life near them-notes from classmates and teachers, his homework.

Only two months before, he had handwritten the essay about encountering Jesus in a file room full of cards detailing every moment of the teen's life.. But it was only after Brian's death that Beth and Bruce Moore realized that their son had described his view of heaven. "It makes such an impact that people want to share it. You feel like you are there." Mr. Moore said.
Brian Moore died May 27, 1997, the day after Memorial Day. He was driving home from a friend's house when his car went off Bulen-Pierce Road in Pickaway County and struck a utility pole. He emerged from the wreck unharmed but stepped on a downed power line and was electrocuted.

The Moores framed a copy of Brian's essay and hung it among the family portraits in the living room. "I think God used him to make a point. I think we were meant to find it and make something out of it," Mrs. Moore said of the essay. She and her husband want to share their son's vision of life after death. "I'm happy for Brian. I know he's in heaven. I know I'll see him."
 Brian's Essay: The Room...
In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in the room. There were no distinguishing features except for the one wall covered with small index card files. They were like the ones in libraries that list titles by author or subject in alphabetical order. But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endless in either direction, had very different headings. As I drew near the wall of files, the first to catch my attention was one that read "Girls I have liked." I opened it and began flipping through the cards. I quickly shut it, shocked to realize that I recognized the names written on each one. And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was.

This lifeless room with its small files was a crude catalog system for my life. Here were written the actions of my every moment, big and small, in a detail my memory couldn't match. A sense of wonder and curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me as I began randomly opening files and exploring their content. Some brought joy and sweet memories; others a sense of shame and regret so intense that I would look over my shoulder to see if anyone was watching.
A file named "Friends" was next to one marked "Friends I have betrayed." The titles ranged from the mundane to the outright weird "Books I Have Read," "Lies I Have Told," "Comfort I have Given," "Jokes I Have Laughed at." Some were almost hilarious in their exactness: "Things I've yelled at my brothers." Others I couldn't laugh at: "Things I Have Done in My Anger", "Things I Have Muttered Under My Breath at My Parents." I never ceased to be surprised by the contents.

Often there were many more cards than I expected. Sometimes fewer than I hoped. I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the life I had lived. Could it be possible that I had the time in my years to fill each of these thousands or even millions of cards? But each card confirmed this truth. Each was written in my own handwriting. Each signed with my signature.
When I pulled out the file marked "TV Shows I have watched", I realized the files grew to contain their contents. The cards were packed tightly, and yet after two or three yards, I hadn't found the end of the file. I shut it, shamed, not so much by the quality of shows but more by the vast time I knew that file represented.
When I came to a file marked "Lustful Thoughts," I felt a chill run through my body. I pulled the file out only an inch, not willing to test its size and drew out a card. I shuddered at its detailed content.
I felt sick to think that such a moment had been recorded. An almost animal rage broke on me. One thought dominated my mind: No one must ever see these cards! No one must ever see this room! I have to destroy them!" In insane frenzy I yanked the file out. Its size didn't matter now. I had to empty it and burn the cards. But as I took it at one end and began pounding it on the floor, I could not dislodge a single card. I became desperate and pulled out a card, only to find it as strong as steel when I tried to tear it.
Defeated and utterly helpless, I returned the file to its slot. Leaning my forehead against the wall, I let out a long, self-pitying sigh.
And then I saw it.. The title bore "People I Have Shared the Gospel With." The handle was brighter than those around it, newer, almost unused. I pulled on its handle and a small box not more than three inches long fell into my hands. I could count the cards it contained on one hand.
And then the tears came. I began to weep. Sobs so deep that they hurt. They started in my stomach and shook through me. I fell on my knees and cried. I cried out of shame, from the overwhelming shame of it all. The rows of file shelves swirled in my tear-filled eyes. No one must ever, ever know of this room. I must lock it up and hide the key. But then as I pushed away the tears, I saw Him.
No, please not Him. Not here. Oh, anyone but Jesus. I watched helplessly as He began to open the files and read the cards. I couldn't bear to watch His response. And in the moments I could bring myself to look at His face, I saw a sorrow deeper than my own.
He seemed to intuitively go to the worst boxes. Why did He have to read every one? Finally He turned and looked at me from across the room. He looked at me with pity in His eyes. But this was a pity that didn't anger me. I dropped my head, covered my face with my hands and began to cry again. He walked over and put His arm around me. He could have said so many things. But He didn't say a word. He just cried with me.

Then He got up and walked back to the wall of files. Starting at one end of the room, He took out a file and, one by one, began to sign His name over mine on each card. "No!" I shouted rushing to Him. All I could find to say was "No, no," as I pulled the card from Him. His name shouldn't be on these cards. But there it was, written in red so rich, so dark, so alive. The name of Jesus covered mine. It was written with His blood. He gently took the card back. He smiled a sad smile and began to sign the cards. I don't think I'll ever understand how He did it so quickly, but the next instant it seemed I heard Him close the last file and walk back to my side.
He placed His hand on my shoulder and said, "It is finished." I stood up, and He led me out of the room. There was no lock on its door. There were still cards to be written.

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."-Phil. 4:13 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." If you feel the same way forward it so the love of Jesus will touch their lives also. My "People I shared the gospel with" file just got bigger, how about yours?

Universal Life Church - handfastings

I would love to share *s*.  I always love to share.

We are very small, perhaps 100 members.  We're scattered all over the place.  We work primarily with the homeless, finding that most have a very deep need to be loved ... so we move them to see that God and in His Son, Jesus ... they are very loved.  After that, if they put forward of themselves, they reap what is sown.

It's a very basic lesson.

On a more 'traditional' note, we preside over weddings/handfastings, baptisms/namings ... the occasional funeral.

Our rectory was burned when we officiated at a Pagan handfasting.  They hung a cross upside down and it was too close to the building.  We managed to get the living beings (ourselves) out, but lost most of everything else.  I know the paperwork, like through your organization is important, but ... there were children in the house ... they came first, along with the pets and other things that breath.

We presided over two more handfastings in the shell of what was left and one wedding the following weekend and the arsonists can just go eat cake *lol*.  They were NOT shutting me up or stopping me.

We are now in Michigan and looking at acquiring a property up north around Houghton Lake.  When I have an address set up more permanent ... I'll do a change with you in a more timely manner.

There's more, but I don't want to bore you, you've probably gotten your fill of people like myself ... talking your ear off.

Kind Words - Courses

I am enjoying the courses immensely.  I hope to sign up for a few more this fall and spring and am looking forward to completing the requirements for the Master of Ministry degree in the near future.

The quality of the course (Religious Philosophy) is very impressive especially as a jumping off point to encourage yourself to do extra reading and study.  I hope the other courses offer this type of professionalism and high quality.  Many thanks for the excellent work that the seminary is doing to improve the quality of the ULC ministry.

Universal Life Church

If they know of him at all, many folks think Ben Stein is just a quirky actor/comedian who talks in a monotone. He's also a very intelligent attorney who knows how to put ideas and words together in such a way as to sway juries and make people think clearly. The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on

CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.

Herewith a few confessions from my beating heart: I have no freaking clue who Nick and Jessica are. I see them on the cover of People and Us constantly when I am buying my dog biscuits and kitty litter. I often ask the checkers at the grocery stores. They never know who Nick and Jessica are either. Who are they? Will it change my life if I know who they are and why they have broken up? Why are they so important? I don't know who Lindsay Lohan is either, and I do not care at all about Tom Cruise's wife.

Am I going to be called before a Senate committee and asked if I am a subversive? Maybe, but I just have no clue who Nick and Jessica are.

If this is what it means to be no longer young. It's not so bad.

Next confession:

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, "Merry Christmas" to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution, and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship Nick and Jessica and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him?

I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where Nick and Jessica came from and where the America we knew went to. In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking. Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her "How could God let something lik e this Happen?" (regarding Katrina)  Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives.

And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?"

In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found recently) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK.

Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school . the Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said OK.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with "WE REAP WHAT WE SOW."

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell.

Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says.

Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.  Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.

Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit. If not then just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

My Best Regards .. honestly and respectfully,

Ben Stein
